Meet Spanky! He’s finally ready to be up for adoption after completing his heartworm treatment. Yayyy! This sweet soul, Spanky, is looking for his forever home and we need to spread the word because someone is about to hit the jackpot. Spanky and two other dogs were found tied together in a basement in a house in the Bahamas where they spent their formative years. His story is heartbreaking, but he doesn't dwell in the past. Spanky is about three-years-old, neutered, and officially heartworm negative. Over the past six months of his treatment we have learned a lot about him! He loves: nose work, ALL the snuggles (all the time!), sniffy walks, hoomans, holding toys in his mouth, stuffed enrichment (kongs!), FOOD, and now, that he is healthy, he loves to RUN! Spanky has a very gentle giant disposition and excels at learning new tricks including loose leash walking, down stays, touch, and recall. Spanky is a bit of a bull in a china shop but he’s learning to be aware of his own body, so children above 12 would be best but we are willing to consider dog savvy kids. As you can see in this video he is the cutest and happiest little duck (he has "crate feet" from being in a confined area as a puppy) and loves everyone he meets. He’s such a good boy. He does not mind other dogs but we are assessing him further to see what type of living situation would be best. For now, we are looking for an only dog home or someone savvy with managing multi dog homes. Has not been cat tested. Will you please share this post so Spanky can have his happily ever after? Spanky is currently located in Fairfield, CT. If you are interested in learning more, please email wellmanneredmuttct@gmail.com To apply to adopt: handsomedansrescue.org

Bella just turned a year old in December. She came into the shelter because she needed FHO surgery, her hip ball was out of the joint and had been for some time. Warwick Shelter took care of the surgery she so desperately needed, she has recovered, and now she is ready to find her forever home! Bella is a participant in Handsome Dan's Rescue's Shelter Dog Enrichment Program where she is matched to volunteer Margaux. Margaux and Bella are attending Outbound Hounds' training classes where she is learning lots of commands and good manners. Bella does not do well with cats but may be able to have a male canine sibling. For questions about Bella please contact Margaux at HDRMargaux@gmail.com To apply to adopt Bella: handsomedansrescue.org

Pretty Lyla is very sweet, and very fearful. We speculate that she was not exposed to much in her short 8-month life so she will need lots of time, patience, and training to help her feel better and learn to trust. Lyla's dad was an Australian Shepherd her mom was a pit mix with some Sharpei. Anyone interested in adopting Lyla would need to visit her at the shelter many times to build up a bond. We currently have two volunteers, Valerie, and trainer Adina Downing, CPDT-KA making weekly visits. Lyla is a Take My Lead dog meaning she has received a grant from Handsome Dan's Rescue for up to $500 in private training with her Take My Lead trainer, FREE group class through Outbound Hounds, and FREE training equipment, supplies, and enrichment items. All this is to help set Lyla and her adopter up for success during the transition to her new home and beyond. For questions please email Adina at amd3@grad.bryant.edu To apply to adopt Lyla: handsomedansrescue.org Thank you for choosing rescue!

Applesauce was one of the almost 300 dogs rescued from a large scale dogfighting case in South Carolina. He is a fearful guy who is just now learning what it's like to live in a home as a pet. We will change his bio when we feel he is ready to be placed up for adoption. We are not taking applications at this time. Sweet Hercules was hit by a car at six weeks old. Heroic efforts and surgeries saved his life but he has permanent spinal damage rendering him incontinent. We realize this is a tall order, but Hercules is worth it and will bring joy to any person or family with a big enough heart to open their home to him. Camilo is an older gentleman who is a gentle giant. He gets along well with other dogs, is potty and crate trained and is an overall good boy! Like all of us he comes with a little baggage. He is being treated for immune mediated thrombocytopenia meaning his body isn’t able to make and maintain platelets at a healthy level. He is being treated with a series of medications that cost over $300 month. His forever home will need to be able to maintain these medications and whatever other medications and treatments are needed. Despite all of this Camilo is still playful, goofy and loves to go on walks with his people. Interested in more information about Camilo fill out and application or email hdrjen@gmail.com To apply to adopt: handsomedansrescue.org

Ethel found herself in the shelter as a stray, confused as to what she was doing there. As time went on, she grew increasingly anxious and the environment was stressing her out. See, the thing about Ethel, is that she appreciates a calm environment. She loves her walks and play time, but truly longs for a quiet, calm environment where she can decompress and relax. So if you’re active enough to keep up with exercising her, but also willing to cuddle her endlessly, then she is your girl. She's an adult dog, but she’s a spitfire, and can run laps around dogs half her age. All that energy makes shelter life hard for her, ultimately affecting her quality of life, and over time, will continue to dim that sparkle we all see in her. This sweet gal has enjoyed her time outside of the shelter, being doted on by our incredible volunteers, Stephanie and Taber, who turned a two night stay into two months. She has soaked up sunshine, stolen hearts, shredded a menagerie of toys, and most of all, learned how to thrive outside of the shelter environment. Ethel loves exercise, and will gladly be your running partner. She also loves naps, and enjoys using the quiet time to really decompress. She’s the best of both worlds. Work hard, nap hard. Questions? HDRSteph@gmail.com To apply to adopt Ethel visit us at https://www.handsomedansrescue.org/adoption-application/

Mack is a sweet boy who loves to snuggle. Mack’s ability to double as a weighted blanket could not come at a better time. He enjoys cozying up to people, taking walks, and cozying up to people. This is not a typo… he’s a boy who knows what he likes? Mack is a gentleman on leash. Mack takes his introductions to new people slowly, but once he warms up, you’ll have a lap dog for life. Fast moving objects and sudden loud noises seem to startle him a bit, so a quieter home may work best for Mack. Mack takes treats gently, and knows some basic commands. He’s learning more at weekly Pit Class where he plans to graduate Magna Snacks Laude. If you are interested in adopting Mack, please contact HDRRachael@gmail.com To apply to adopt Mack: https://www.handsomedansrescue.org/adoption-application/

Lilly has had a really tough last year and a half, but we can fill you in more on that later. For now, you need to know that she is absolutely perfect. She is potty trained, super well behaved in the house, knows sit, down, stay, and paw, walks relatively well on leash. She met a kitten who she kissed immediately (see photo). Lilly would make a great family dog. She is an adorable mix of lab mix, we think, but she pretty much acts like an affectionate little shadow. She is medium to low energy and wants nothing more to snuggle on the couch. Sadly, when we met Lilly she had a massive tumor on her chest. That was removed and the pathology results told us it was a mast cell tumor, grade two. She had two mast cell tumors removed in 2020, and has a small one on her back right now. Her liver and kidney values are good so there is not reason to suspect she has additional tumors inside of her body. But Lilly will continue to have these mast cell tumors pop up, and they will continue to need to be removed. It's just who she is, it's part of her, but does not define her. Due to this, she will need an adopter with the means and willingness to have any new tumors removed as necessary. Lily needs a fenced in yard. To apply to adopt Lilly, please fill out an application at handsomedansrescue.org. If you have questions about Lily, please email Matt at matt71489@gmail.com. Seriously, this is one special dog. Don't let her medical needs scare you off. She is beyond worth it!
