Meet our Adoptable Dogs
From time to time our website has problems displaying our animals available for adoption at Petfinder. If there are no animals displaying on this page, please visit Handsome Dan’s Rescue for Pitbull Type Dogs at Petfinder directly to see Available Animals. Thank you!

Micky is a fun and playful four-year-old Husky / GSD mix. He was adopted from Lincoln shelter as a puppy, but when his owner passed away he was returned to the shelter to find a new home. Micky has been at the shelter for six months, and it's starting to get to him. He is such a good boy, we want him seen so that the perfect forever home can find him. Please email Alexis at the shelter with any questions or to meet Micky. awilliams@lincolnri.org
This sweet boy is very fearful. He was part of a cruelty case. We can explain more on that to any interested applicants. He will need a very patient adopter willing to continue working to help him trust and habituate to life in the community. We would prefer an only dog home for him at this time. Also we probably won't place him with kids due to his level of fear with fast movements right now. However, we hope with time he will become more comfortable with all of these things. He lives at a local shelter where their most skilled staff has been working hard to help him recover from his past life. He is part of the Handsome Dan's Shelter Dog Enrichment Program where he has been matched to dedicated volunteer Rachael. You can contact her at HDRrachael@gmail.com for questions and more info. He has been granted an HDR Take My Lead grant, which in this case we prefer to be a mandatory part of adoption due to his level of fear, which provides him with FREE private training and group classes once adopted. Please don't overlook him due to his level of fear, It's very rewarding to help such a fearful dog learn to trust.
Young and friendly Harley is about a year and nine months old as of August. She has a positive attitude and zest for life. Harley has been well socialized, as we find of most dogs who's owners are unhomed and have had to surrender their dogs. Warning: Harley does pull on leash, but that is a relatively fix. She has received a Take My Lead grant offering her FREE Basic One class through Handsome Dan's Rescue and Outbound Hounds to help set her up for success in her new home. If you like a big dog with a big personality, please consider adopting Harley. She is sure to put a smile on your face everyday! Harley is a resident of North Attleboro shelter and has been evaluated by Outbound Hounds/Handsome Dan's Rescue's certified dog trainers. Thank you for choosing rescue!
Honey is 6 years old. Sweet as her name, she loves rolling in the grass, belly scratches and long walks with her people. She is a bit selective when it comes to other dogs but we think she will do great with the right one in a home. Honey has been evaluated by HDR trainers and found that she will be a lovely addition to most any home. A home without cats is best for Honey. She resides at North Attleboro shelter. For inquiries please reach out to hdrjudie@gmail.com
Saban is around three years old, and is a sweet gentle lady. She can be a bit timid at first, so she is looking for a home that will have a bit of patience as she warms up. Once she is comfortable, she is an absolute treat. She loves snacks, hanging out with her people, and may get along with a calm dog-friend with the proper introductions. She is learning her basic commands and is proving to be quite the quick study - she will do anything for her cookies! If you are interested in sweet Saban, email HDRamygm@gmail.com or fill out an application at handsomedansrescue.org
Meet these two live bugs! I am fostering them for the RISPCA. I’m still just getting to know them so all I can really say is that one is a little more outgoing than the other. On day four they were both taking sunflower seeds out of my hand, day six they were walking onto my hand. I’m taking it at their pace and when they are comfortable we will start picking them up. They don’t seem to have been handled much before coming to the shelter so we are going at their pace to build trust. They are fun little guys to watch. They run around their tank and play and build things, they burrow tunnels and chase each other. They also cuddle together when sleeping! You can email me for info at heather@obhounds.com. Again, while I am the director of Handsome Dan’s Rescue, I am fostering these guys for the RISPCA.
Bucky is a work in progress. He is not yet available due to some behavioral issues. He is undergoing ongoing assessments, a behavior modification plan. We are working closely with his veterinarian to give him the best shot at success. Bucky has been granted a Handsome Dan's Rescue Take My Lead Grant.
Hazel is a little timid at first but once she warms up she is very affectionate. She was picked up as a stray but has been receiving tons of TLC at Hopkington shelter by ACO Sam. Hazel is potty trained, has been great with Sam's kids who are 5 and 8. The only issue we could find was that she does jump up when excited, but that is an easy fix. Otherwise, she is prefect and there isn't a home situation I can think of where she would not do well. We believe that Hazel is a pittie mixed with something else, our best guess is a Dutch Shepherd as she has an undercoat and similar coloring, and her facial structure is similar. We suspect she would do well with dog sports, if that is something that might interest an adopter. Rally, advanced obedience, or possibly agility. If you are interested in adopting Hazel, and who wouldn't be, please fill out an application at handsomedansrescue.org. Thank you for choosing rescue.
Full disclosure, Lyla is not a lab mix, but she looks so much like one and she was getting no hits listing her actual crazy breed mix as reported by DNA testing. Pretty Lyla is very sweet, and very fearful. We speculate that she was not exposed to much in her short 10-month life so she will need lots of time, patience, and training to help her feel better and learn to trust. Lyla's dad was an Australian Shepherd her mom was a pit mix with some Sharpei. Lyla has is now in the Handsome Dan’s Rescue foster care program with volunteers Anya, Tyler, and Jess. Anyone interested in adopting Lyla would need to visit her to build up a bond. While she was loved and adored at Warwick Shelter we had two volunteers, Valerie, and trainer Adina Downing, CPDT-KA making weekly visits. Lyla is a Take My Lead dog meaning she has received a grant from Handsome Dan's Rescue for up to $500 in private training with her Take My Lead trainer, FREE group class through Outbound Hounds, and FREE training equipment, supplies, and enrichment items. All this is to help set Lyla and her adopter up for success during the transition to her new home and beyond. For questions please email Adina at amd3@grad.bryant.edu To apply to adopt Lyla: handsomedansrescue.org Thank you for choosing rescue!
Applesauce was one of the almost 300 dogs rescued from a large scale dogfighting case in South Carolina. He is a fearful guy who is just now learning what it's like to live in a home as a pet. We will change his bio when we feel he is ready to be placed up for adoption. We are not taking applications at this time. Follow him at #applesauce #ourapplesauce #mrapplesauce and #crisscrossapplesauce
Camilo is an older gentleman who is a gentle giant. He gets along well with other dogs, is potty and crate trained and is an overall good boy! Like all of us he comes with a little baggage. He is being treated for immune mediated thrombocytopenia meaning his body isn’t able to make and maintain platelets at a healthy level. He is being treated with a series of medications that cost over $300 month. His forever home will need to be able to maintain these medications and whatever other medications and treatments are needed. Despite all of this Camilo is still playful, goofy and loves to go on walks with his people. Interested in more information about Camilo fill out and application or email hdrjen@gmail.com To apply to adopt: handsomedansrescue.org
Lilly has had a really tough last year and a half, but we can fill you in more on that later. For now, you need to know that she is absolutely perfect. She is potty trained, super well behaved in the house, knows sit, down, stay, and paw, walks relatively well on leash. She met a kitten who she kissed immediately (see photo). Lilly would make a great family dog. She is an adorable mix of lab mix, we think, but she pretty much acts like an affectionate little shadow. She is medium to low energy and wants nothing more to snuggle on the couch. Sadly, when we met Lilly she had a massive tumor on her chest. That was removed and the pathology results told us it was a mast cell tumor, grade two. She had two mast cell tumors removed in 2020, and has a small one on her back right now. Her liver and kidney values are good so there is not reason to suspect she has additional tumors inside of her body. But Lilly will continue to have these mast cell tumors pop up, and they will continue to need to be removed. It's just who she is, it's part of her, but does not define her. Due to this, she will need an adopter with the means and willingness to have any new tumors removed as necessary. Lily needs a fenced in yard. To apply to adopt Lilly, please fill out an application at handsomedansrescue.org. If you have questions about Lily, please email Matt at matt71489@gmail.com. Seriously, this is one special dog. Don't let her medical needs scare you off. She is beyond worth it!
